It seems strange that something as small as a hand gesture has such potential to cause problems. It also makes me a little afraid to travel without pinning my arm to my sides(ha,ha). Seriously it makes me wonder how often as teachers that we insult our students/their families without knowing it.
I feel there is a common thread through the eel video and the hand gesture video and that is we need to understand something about the values and culture ofthe people we interact with if we want those interactions to be positve and productive. As educators that means we must strive to understand where our students are coming from before we try to teach them.
I find it interesting that different gesture mean different things in other countries. The hand up in Greece is something bad where here it is done commonly. The feet up is considered rude and we put our feet up all the time.

I would have to say the barking fish is my favorite. I have shown that video to a handful of people and all have laughed just as hard as I did.
